City libraries open doors to learning, jobs and opportunity

With the new year well under way, City libraries are at the ready to support residents of all ages – from young ones conquering their ABCs, to providing free digital resources to help the older set to connect to jobs, entrepreneurial opportunities and more. In the last six months, City libraries welcomed more than 24 000 new members. Read more below:
The City of Cape Town has 102 public libraries that offer completely free membership and services. Libraries loan out books, audiobooks and DVDs, provide free access to computers and the internet through SmartCape, and host a range of programmes designed to support learning, development and opportunity.
No age group is left behind … from pram jams for newborns and toddlers, to reading pogrammes in the Early Childhood Development phase and beyond, study support for older learners and employment readiness programmes for adults.
'Our libraries are welcoming, safe and inclusive spaces that offer free support to residents at every stage of life. While membership is not required to visit our libraries, it does allow residents to borrow material to read at your leisure, or for study purposes, and opens access to all our digital resources. From books and study space to SmartCape computers and skills programmes, our libraries are there to give everyone a hand up — regardless of age or income. If you haven't visited your local library yet, I encourage you to do so and to sign up as a member. It costs nothing, but the benefits are significant,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.LIBRARIES' IMPACT BY NUMBERS:
- As at 31 December 2025, City libraries had a total membership of 253 075.
- Since July 2025, at least 24 127 new members have joined Cape Town's libraries.
- Between July and December 2025, libraries recorded 3 925 718 visits.
- In the last three months of 2025, libraries circulated 1 105 896 items, i.e. items checked out by users across all service points.
- In the 2024/25 financial year, libraries recorded a 4% increase in the number of visitors accessing the internet via SmartCape, from 423 811 to 441 451
- Persons aged 26+ accounted for 52% of usage, with those aged between 13 and 17 accounting for 13%.
'Nearly four million visits in six months highlight just how important and well-used City libriaries are. While not every visitor is a member, membership allows residents – and their children – to get the most out of what libraries offer,' added Councillor Higham.
Signing up as a member is quick and easy – you just need an identity document and proof of address.
Adults are able to sign up children for membership on presentation of the required documentation.
For in-person applications, membership is activated immediately, which means new patrons receive their library card on the spot and are able to borrow material on the same day.
Applications can also be completed online. In such instances, new patrons have immediate access to all online offerings, and have to collect their library card within seven days. Online applications can be made here: https://opac.capetown.gov.za/
